Most of us reading these words were born in this country, living out some version of the American Dream. You may be a student pursuing a degree, a business owner expanding operations, a parent raising a family, or even a lawmaker working to
serve the public.
But not all of us were born with this inheritance. Every year, thousands leave behind their homes, families, and familiar lives in pursuit of something greater: safety, freedom, economic opportunity, and the possibility to build a better future.
As we mark the 250th anniversary of our nation, the Mackinac Center is highlighting the stories of immigrants who made that leap and risked everything to chase the promise of America. Their journeys reflect the same spirit that defined our founding: a willingness to leave behind the known to pursue liberty, opportunity, and self-determination.
The “Chasing the American Dream” video series features stories from Brazil, India, Venezuela, Armenia, Romania, and beyond. Each story shows us how the ideals that shaped our nation hundreds of years ago continue to inspire people around the world today.
