Lawmakers are considering two bill packages.
Michigan currently reciprocates licenses from other states for some occupations. But the process is still difficult and unnecessarily tedious. The Great Lake State should join Arizona and automatically recognize the out-of-state licenses of people moving to or working in Michigan.
State laws currently allow law enforcement to take ownership of people’s property without convicting them of, or even charging them with, criminal activity. This process is called civil asset forfeiture. While Michigan has made some changes, it should require a criminal conviction before the government permanently keeps cash, cars or other assets from private citizens.
Lawmakers have approved billions of dollars in select corporate subsidies in recent years, but many of the details are kept secret from the public. This is bad policy and may be unconstitutional.
