ONAWAY, Mich. - Onaway Area Schools will reduce spending by about $500,000 and use $220,000 in fund equity to make ends meet in 2010-2011, The Alpena News reported. The district will not offer band or building trades programs, at least temporarily, according to the report.
Interim Superintendent Rod Fullerton told the school board that declining enrollment and state revenue decreases made the spending cuts necessary. Seven teaching or staff positions will not be filled under the reduced spending plan, The News reported. The district is investigating sharing teachers with other districts in certain subjects, or offering online instruction, according to The News.
The district also will cut $7,500 from the school's athletic budget by not paying for junior high school coaches next year, the report said.
