Union Membership Is Your Choice

No public employee in the United States can be required to join a union or pay dues just to keep a job. That goes for police officers, firefighters, teachers, nurses, corrections officers, and other government employees. This protection applies nationwide, in every state, at every government workplace.

The protection comes from a 2018 U.S. Supreme Court ruling, Janus v. AFSCME, which confirmed that public employees have the freedom to decide for themselves whether to pays dues to a union.
