MONROE, Mich. — The retirement of 36 teachers in Monroe Public Schools is one reason the district will recall all 187 employees who were pink-slipped in March, according to The Toledo Blade.
School officials said the layoffs no longer were necessary because of the retirements and employee attrition, The Blade reported.
The retirees fall under a new state incentive intended to encourage older, higher-paid employees to retire and then to replace them, if necessary, with younger teachers at beginning salaries, The Blade reported.
"This helped out tremendously. The purpose of the retirement incentive was to get recent college graduates and unemployed teachers into jobs," Ken Laub, assistant superintendent of business, told The Blade.
Laub told The Blade that work now will begin to determine teaching assignments, based on each educator's certifications.
