This week two giants of the think tank movement, the Cato Institute and the Heritage Foundation, both in Washington, D.C., celebrate 25 years of helping turn free-market ideas into public policy.
Inspired by their examples, numerous groups, including the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, have sprouted up around the country in the past quarter-century, focusing their energies on bringing the same kind of sound policy analysis Cato and Heritage are known for at the federal level to their respective state governments.
On this special occasion, the staff of the Mackinac Center extends its well wishes to its sister think tanks in Washington-and throughout the country-and offers its thanks for all they have done to advance the cause of liberty in America-and the world.
Below is a link to a May 8, 2002, Washington Post tribute to Cato and Heritage by David Broder. His column explains not only the value of these two institutions but the vital role of sound ideas in general.
