The Mackinac Center for Public Policy seeks a Vice President of People and Operations to lead our talent, financial and operational strategies. This role oversees financial activities, human resources, operations and information technology. The goals of the position are to foster financial stability, a high-performing workforce and operational excellence for a nonprofit with an $11 million annual budget.

Responsibilities
Oversee Financial Strategy: Provide strategic direction for financial operations, including budgeting, audits, GAAP compliance and cash/investment management, ensuring fiscal stability. Produce financial reports, dashboards and board packets. Depending on the candidate’s experience, he or she may directly manage the organization’s financial operations or may collaborate with a director of finance.
Lead Talent Strategy: Design and implement innovative recruitment, talent development and training programs to attract, develop and retain top performers. Help foster the values and culture promoted in the organization.
Ensure Operational Excellence: Oversee management of the Mackinac Center’s office building in Midland. Oversee risk management (insurance, contracts, leases) and IT systems to create a seamless, efficient workplace.
Supervise Key Teams: Lead a team of six to eight members, including the director of finance, senior director of operations, and manager of information technology. Mentor other leaders throughout the organization as needed.
Champion Compliance: Oversee compliance with IRS, State of Michigan, Department of Labor, and regulatory filings. Serve as the plan administrator for all employee benefit plans, oversee the payroll function and communicate with staff on employment matters.
Inform Strategic Decisions: Present financial and operational insights to senior leaders and the board of directors, translating data into actionable strategies. Prepare quarterly board packets and occasionally present at board meetings.
Foster Mission Alignment: Embed the Center’s commitment to liberty and opportunity into talent and operational strategies.

The Mackinac Center is a nonpartisan research and educational institute dedicated to improving the quality of life of all Michigan residents by promoting sound solutions to state and local policy questions. We advance liberty and opportunity for all people by developing free-market policies, challenging government overreach and influencing public opinion so that it encourages policymakers to act in the broad public interest rather than narrow private or government interests. The Mackinac Center is a nonprofit organization with 45 full-time employees, a 50-member Board of Scholars and an annual operating budget of $11 million.
This position is a full-time, in-house position located at our headquarters in Midland, Michigan. The role reports to the executive vice president. The Mackinac Center offers competitive salary and benefits including but not limited to health, dental, life, disability insurance, retirement plan and 30 days paid time off, in addition to ten paid holidays per year.
