Expanding Medicaid is critical to the survival of the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. Michigan legislators are being encouraged by the White House, Gov. Rick Snyder, hospitals and drug makers, along with other lobbyists to expand Michigan’s Medicaid program to 320,000 additional Michigan residents in 2014. The program would cover more than 470,000 by 2021. This issue is being debated right now for next year’s state budget. A decision is expected in August. The purpose of this event is to examine the long-term implications and effects of such a move.

Avik Roy is a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute. His research interests include Medicare, Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act and consumer-driven health care. He is author of The Apothecary, the influential Forbes blog on health care policy and entitlement reform. He is a frequent guest on MSNBC, CNBC, Fox News, Fox Business, and HBO. In 2012, he served as an adviser to the Mitt Romney campaign on health care policy.
