DETROIT — Eighteen charter school organizations have submitted bids to turn current Detroit Public Schools buildings into charter schools, according to The Detroit News.
The list includes a broad range of local and national organizations, among them the Leona Group, Mosaica Education, the Detroit Association of Black Organizations, Peak Performance and Robert Shumake/Take the Land Nonprofit Housing Corp.
DPS emergency financial manager Robert Bobb said that some applicants already operate charter schools that “significantly” outperform the DPS schools that they would take over, The News reported.
The district is working with the National Association of Charter School Authorizers on evaluating the applications, according to The News. Of 45 schools identified as takeover candidates, 17 are scheduled to be closed if they aren’t converted.
