WHITEHALL, Mich. - A Whitehall High School teacher and basketball coach has been charged with criminal sexual conduct involving a 15-year-old girl, and an investigation continues into possible other charges, according to the White Lake Beacon.

Jared Bays, 32, who teaches government and history in the district's alternative education program and coaches the girls' varsity basketball team, was arrested following an investigation by Michigan State Police, the Beacon reported.

The district has placed him on non-disciplinary, paid administrative leave, the Beacon reported, pending the outcome of the police case and its own internal investigation. A substitute teacher will handle Bays' classes and the boys' varsity basketball coach will now coach both teams.

A female student alleged that she had sex with Bays two years ago when she was 15 years old and in eighth grade, investigators told the Beacon. Officials said they are investigating allegations of similar behavior with other girls.
