Everything You Need to Know, Except the Cost

May tax proposal will cost $2 billion

Roads and schools both benefit from a $2 billion May 5 ballot proposal.

MLive recently posted a story about the May 5 tax proposal with the headline: “Michigan Prop 1 road funding: Everything you need to know about voting, ballot language.”

Everything — except, what the tax proposal will cost if approved. That’s $2 billion, which the article never mentions. The article does point out $1.2 billion will be generated for the roads, and mentions an additional $310 million will be raised, but neglects another $500 million in taxes the proposal will impose.

ForTheRecord says: CapCon has documented previous examples of media outlets including MLive omitting perhaps the number one thing most voters would want to know about a big tax hike they’re being asked to approve: How much?

It's a net $2 billion tax increase.
