Huffington Post cites this 2000 commentary by Michael LaFaive, director of the Morey Fiscal Policy Initiative, which put forth the idea that Belle Isle should be sold to private investors. A recent consent agreement between the state and Detroit would lease the island to the Department of Natural Resources.

Just a few miles away on the Detroit River, the site of a new bridge to Canada continues to make headlines. Crain’s Detroit Business reports that Gov. Rick Snyder may be able to bypass the Legislature in order to get the new crossing built by using an interlocal agreement. Crain’s cites Mackinac Center research that there are currently about 1,000 such agreements in place throughout Michigan, including about 700 that have been signed since 2000.
