EASTPOINTE, Mich. — The city of Eastpointe would convert two school buildings into senior housing if it qualifies for $490,000 in federal money to help pay for the project, The Macomb Daily reported.
East Detroit Public Schools was expected to approve the sale of a middle school and high school to the city; the middle school would become a condominium complex and the high school would be demolished to make room for new housing, the report said. The purchase price was not reported.
The city would turn over the property to a private developer to build and manage the projects, according to The Daily, though the property would revert to city ownership if the federal funds are not approved.
"We are taking a couple of pieces of property that otherwise might sit there for a long time in this economy without a buyer," Eastpointe Mayor Suzanne Pixley said of the deal, according to The Daily. "The school board is getting money for the properties and we are returning the property to the tax rolls."
