A columnist for Michigan Business Review says the Michigan Economic Development Corp.'s complaints about critics who point out the agency's failures is a "highly unusual move."

"I sense that they're in survival mode, just as the MEDC was in the final year of the Engler administration," Morey Fiscal Policy Director Mike LaFaive told the columnist.

The Detroit News and Detroit Free Press both picked up on a story that Michigan Capitol Confidential Senior Capitol Correspondent Tom Gantert broke more than a week ago that showed Ann Arbor-based Google has added less than one-fifth of the 1,000 jobs the MEDC claimed would be created as part of a $38 million subsidy package.

"Most of the companies had not met job promises within the time frame promised," LaFaive told the Free Press. "It's time to try a different tack."

Capitol Confidential also has a story today about the MEDC claims that criticism of it is "unwarranted."
