ROCKFORD —In this Kent County community, private plumbing inspectors get a higher rating than does the state of Michigan. City council members voted recently to switch from the state’s plumbing inspection service to a contract with Professional Code Inspections (PCI). The company had already been doing mechanical, electrical, and structural inspections for Rockford.

PCI’s inspection fee of $20 compares favorably to the state’s charge of $30. Furthermore, under the new arrangement, a flat fee for an entire home will not exceed $100. State inspections can go as high as $250.

Rockford city manager Michael Young added that because of the state inspectors’ large workload, inspections are often not completed in a timely fashion or are not completed at all.
