Mackinac Center Senior Economist David Littmann argues that the current debate in Washington is a distraction from the real issue, which is government spending. With the economy no longer growing strongly and consistently enough to support expanded government, cuts are the only solution.

Government is out of its league, it's crowding out — it's crushing what's left of our private sector. ...

If they fail to focus purely and simply on cutting today, forget about promises about tomorrow. There is no tomorrow in real terms; the private-sector is being crushed. ... If we can't get the message now, when are we going to get it?
