WESTLAND, Mich. — The regional school board may be tapped to fill a vacancy on the Wayne-Westland Board of Education after the local board could not agree on a candidate, according to the (Westland) Observer & Eccentric.
The local board had 30 days to appoint someone to fill the 11 months remaining in the term of William Gabriel, who resigned in May, the Observer & Eccentric reported, but that time period was expected to expire this weekend.
Seven candidates have applied, but at a recent meeting one board member recused himself from voting on the appointment since he himself was an applicant, and another board member was absent, the Observer & Eccentric reported. The remaining four members did not reach agreement.
Now the Wayne County Regional Education Services Agency Board will appoint someone to fill the spot, according to the Observer & Eccentric. There was disagreement on whether the local board could effectively delay the decision by appointing one of two recent school board election winners to fill it until their regular term begins, the Observer & Eccentric reported.
