A news service for the people of Michigan from the Mackinac Center for Public Policy

Michigan Capitol Confidential is the news source for Michigan residents who want an alternative to “bigger government” remedies in policy debates. CapCon reports on the public officials who seek to limit government, those who do not, and those whose votes are at odds with what they say.

In addition to the Mackinac Center policy staff already providing exclusive coverage, the Michigan Capitol Confidential team includes Manny Lopez, Tom Gantert, Jack Spencer and Jarrett Skorup.

Manny Lopez is managing editor of CapCon and is a 14-year journalism veteran who most recently served as editor of The Detroit News opinion page and previously was the paper's auto editor. Tom Gantert, senior captiol correspondent, previously worked at The Ann Arbor News, Lansing State Journal and Reporting Michigan and has more than two decades of experience covering news and politics in Michigan. Jack Spencer, capitol affairs specialist, is a veteran Lansing-based journalist who worked 13 years at the Michigan Information & Research Service. Jarrett Skorup, research associate for online engagement, is the content manager for CapCon and FOIA expert.

As news coverage in our state capitol dwindles, it is increasingly important to have outside scrutiny of our elected officials and government bureaucracies. We have the team in place to help fill that void. Readers can expect balanced, substantive reporting, aided by insightful analysis, hard data and legal expertise.

The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) "organized” Michigan's self-employed Home Help Program providers for the purpose of skimming dues from their ailing and disabled clients' Medicaid subsidy checks. The majority of these providers are relatives or friends taking care of loved ones. It’s been estimated that less than 25 percent of the providers are hired in an employment setting.

The first counter tallies SEIU dues skimmed since the union and state officials first launched this scheme in late 2006. The second shows the amount skimmed since June 9, 2011, when the Michigan House passed and sent to the Senate a bill to ban this and all similar “stealth unionization” efforts. The third counter shows the dues skimmed since the Governor signed the bill into law on April 10, 2012. The fourth counter shows the amount skimmed since May 25, 2012, when the Attorney General opinion was announced.
