About Michigan Capitol Confidential

Michigan Capitol Confidential is the news source for Michigan residents who want an alternative to “bigger government” remedies in policy debates. MichCapCon reports on the public officials who seek to limit government, those who do not, and those whose votes are at odds with what they say.

In addition to the Mackinac Center policy staff already providing exclusive coverage, the online team includes Manny Lopez, Tom Gantert, Jack Spencer and Anne Schieber. Manny Lopez is a 14-year journalism veteran who most recently served as editor of The Detroit News opinion page. Tom Gantert, formerly of The Ann Arbor News, Lansing State Journal and Reporting Michigan, has more than two decades of experience covering news and politics in Michigan. Jack Spencer is a veteran Lansing-based journalist who worked 13 years at the Michigan Information & Research Service. Anne Schieber has spent 30 years in broadcast journalism, most recently with WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids.

As news coverage in our state capitol dwindles, it is increasingly important to have outside scrutiny of our elected officials and government bureaucracies. We have the team in place to help fill that void. Readers can expect balanced, substantive reporting, aided by insightful analysis, hard data and legal expertise.
