LANSING, Mich. - "Ineffective" teachers could be fired without recourse to tenure protection rules under a bill that passed the state Senate Thursday, according to the Michigan Information & Research Service.
Senate Bill 638, sponsored by Sen. Patty Birkholz, R-Saugatuck, passed 20-13 after an amendment was added that would require effectiveness standards to be defined by the state Superintendent of Public Instruction or first by a local school board and then by the state superintendent, MIRS reported.
The bill was voted down twice earlier in the week, according to MIRS.
